Rick O'Shay, by Stan Lynde

Strip run:  1958 - 1981

Stan Lynde created Rick O'Shay in 1958, and was initially a Western set in contemporary times.  However, just over a decade later in 1969, Lynde decided to set the strip in the old west, and adopted a "centennial theme";  the strip was set exactly a hundred years before the date of each strip.  After some contract disputes with the syndicate in 1977, Lynde quit doing Rick O'Shay entirely.  Marian Dern took over the writing, and Alfred Alcala the art followed by Mel Keefer a year later in 1978.  The strip was set out to pasture in 1981.  Lynde went on to create the comic strips Latigo (1979 - 1983) and Grass Roots, Lynde's self-syndicated series that ran in newspapers from 1984 - 1985.

Sadly, a fire that destroyed the Lynde home in Billings, Montana in December of 1990 also destroyed Stan Lynde's original art.  I am therefore very fortunate to be able to share with you the original art for a pair of Rick O'Shay dailies.

Reverse of framed Rick O'Shay daily by Stan Lynde, June 3, 1969.  Copyright The Chicago Tribune.  Stan Lynde signed and inscribed the back as a gift to the previous owner in Monarch, Montana, in 1982, and I in turn obtained it from the recipient's grandson.  It appears that the previous owner also tore the backing at one time, which is a shame as it tore the inscription as well.
